World Malaria Day
Happy World Malaria Day! Let’s celebrate with a few quick stats! Malaria kills 781,000 people each year Ninety-one percent of malaria-related deaths occur in Africa, the majority of whom are children under 5 years of age In Africa, 40% of health resources are used to treat malaria Wow, that’s really nothing to celebrate. Growing up in the USA, I had certainly heard of Malaria, but can’t say I really understood the depth of the problem. Then I went to Uganda. I was standing in the village of Nakabango, talking to a 12 yr old. Listening to her story of how...
Jesus Doesn't Care Where The Needy Live
Many times I’ve told myself that I wasn’t going to go there. That I wasn’t going to push this topic. That it wasn’t worth the fight it may bring, but lately, it’s really eating at me. I’m seeing things that just break my heart. Today is one of those days. I found this comment on a facebook post from World Vision, as they asked for support for Japan after the recent earthquake. First off, Japan’s government injected a large sum of cash into their own markets. Not US markets. But that’s beside the point. What breaks my heart here is...
Who Cares?
Who Cares? Me. With that out of the way, I want to take a second to make a point about charity. I saw some comments today on Lowe’s Facebook page, where they are giving away $1M. One of the organizations that is up for voting is water.org. I like water.org. A lot. They’re good people. That’s beside the point though… Go check out these comments: http://www.facebook.com/lowes/posts/144071265650674 Here’s what gets me – The argument that the money should stay in the USA. People are saying not to choose water.org because funds will end up being used in another country. Who are we to...
I Believe The Foundation of Christianity is Love
If you follow Three Avocados at all on this blog or Twitter or Facebook, you know that we are an organization born out of a Christian mission trip and founded upon Christian principles. You know that I am a Christian. But I don’t call us a “Christian organization” or a mission. It was actually quite a struggle when starting the organization. Ultimately, it came down to this: I am a firm believer that people’s physical needs must be met before their spiritual needs can be met. I am not a huge fan of tying clean water to the Gospel message...
Why Water Matters
clean water global poverty uganda water
Prior to visiting Uganda in January, 2010, I had no idea what the ‘water crisis’ was. I can truthfully say I had never thought about the 1 billion people on this earth without access to clean water. I literally thought that if a village didn’t have indoor plumbing, they headed down to the river and grabbed some water when they needed it. I had no idea the water they got, they often times walked 4 miles for. Or that the water they are getting has the potential to kill them. Or that it’s often little girls going to fetch water....
