Nicaragua Coffee: Flavor Notes, Regions, & What Makes It Special

At Three Avocados, we have two primary countries we get our coffee from: Uganda and Nicaragua. While African coffee is praised for its bold taste and unique flavors, Central American coffee is more common and mild—but that doesn't make it any less delicious. Discover what makes Nicaraguan coffee so special and how our coffee is giving back to communities around the world.

What Makes Nicaraguan Coffee Unique?

Much of our coffee in the United States comes from Latin America, so you're likely already familiar with the bold, nutty flavors of this region's coffee. But Nicaraguan coffee is unique from its neighboring coffee producers because of its landscape and soil. Most of Nicaragua is well above sea level and considered high altitude. Combine that with soil rich in volcanic nutrients, and you get a unique blend for delicious coffee.

Plus, the farmers in Nicaragua take advantage of their country's variety in climate, allowing them to produce beans in specific regions with specific flavors. For example, a bean that thrives in the rainforest will taste different than the bean that grows on the highest volcanic mountain.

In recent years, the Nicaraguan coffee market is estimated to be worth over $400 billion dollars, most of which is imported to Europe and North America.

Where Is Our Coffee Grown?

Most of Nicaragua's Arabica coffee comes from only three regions: Jinotega, Matagalpa, and Nueva Segovia. There are some flavor differences between the regions, but we personally love Matagalpa, where we get our coffee from, high in the mountains. This single-source coffee ensures consistency across our coffee bags, so you can enjoy the flavors you love from your favorite region!

Flavors Notes of Nicaraguan Coffee

Never had Nicaraguan coffee? Well, you're in for a treat. There's a reason coffee from Central America is beloved across the world. Unlike African coffee (which we do love our Ugandan coffee), Nicaraguan coffee is a mild, sweet brew, making a perfect choice for those newer to coffee or those who prefer a gentler cup. The acidity is low with some pleasant hints of fruit and citrus, allowing you to enjoy the full flavor of the coffee.

You can expect notes of:

  • Brown sugar
  • Nuts
  • Caramel
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus

How We Support Sustainable Coffee Beans in Central America

One of the most important parts of our coffee is how it gives back to the communities it comes from. Every purchase of coffee directly supports clean water efforts in Nicaragua and other in-need countries.

We work with local farmers and people groups, helping them find jobs and produce high-quality coffee that will sustain their families. So every time you drink your morning coffee, you know you're helping the future of coffee by supporting local farmers who produce sustainable coffee
